INTRODUCTION Details regarding t h e application of methods and techniques are given below. I t is to be well understood t h a t each method has its own l i m i t a t i o n s in r e l a t i o n t o environmental factors and the vector's n a t u r a l o r induced behaviour. As adequate sampling and processing of material a r e e s s e n t i a l f o r obtaining s i g n i f i c a n t information, the epidemiologist and the entomologist have to decide together t h e extent of the entomological investigations t o be undertaken in each s i t u a t i o n in order t o achieve f u l l y t h e objectives for which t h e s t u d i e s were planned. Where and when necessary, the investigations should be adjusted t o the local requirements. SAMPLING METHODS The c o l l e c t i n g methods are employed for two types of study: (a) Q u a l i t a t i v e studies, when we need t o study the presence, d i s t r i b u t i o n , type of behaviour of d i f f e r e n t mosquito species in d i f f e r e n t macro- and micro-environmental conditions, e t c . (b) Quantitative studies, when collections are made in order t o measure in d i f f e r e n t s i t u a t i o n s the value and v a r i a b i l i t y of vector r e l a t i v e density and abundance, longevity, i n f e c t i v i t y , impact of antivector measures on the vector population, impact on the transmission (vectorial capacity), e t c .
